Blood Flower Asclepias Plants are the Monarch butterfly's secret power source! It provides a place for them to lay eggs and nectar to fuel them on their migration all while flowering with showy red orange and yellow blooms for months! The hummingbirds and other butterflies like the swallowtail also love this tropical milkweed. It is the host plant for the Monarch butterfly. Tropical Milkweed is a drought-tolerant variety that grows well in average to sandy or rocky soils.
Asclepias Companion Plants: Aster, Echinacea, Kniphofia, Salvia
Tropical Milkweed Plant Care Instructions: Keep the plant well-watered for the first 3-4 weeks. After that, only water if the plant starts looking droopy. Plants can be cut back after the first hard frost. If your area is frost-free, plants must be cut back by the end of October, otherwise the old growth has the potential to harm monarchs the next spring. Spring is a good time to fertilize.
