Spent flowers should NOT be trimmed back if you want to attract songbirds as they enjoy the dried seed heads. Cut it back to the ground in late winter or early spring before the new growth starts. Spring is a good time to apply fertilizer for the year.

Comment: I have just bought a coneflower at a local nursery, and it has not done well at all. So, I ordered a coneflower from GrowJoy to see how it would go. It arrived as a bigger plant than the one I had, and it was full and green! It has continued to look healthy, and I am grateful. Waaay better than the locally purchased plant!
