Plant Features

The Hosta 'Gold Standard' is a classic, widely cherished variety, known for its dynamic foliage transformation. Initially emerging as light green in spring, its leaf centers brighten to gold as summer approaches, with this transformation being notably enhanced under the morning sun. Each broad, seersuckered leaf, stretching up to 8" in length, boasts a dark green margin, lending a striking contrast. As midsummer arrives, this medium to large hosta graces the garden with funnel-shaped, pinkish-lavender flowers on 30" scapes. Whether showcased as a specimen or arranged in mass plantings, its large mound of foliage ensures that Gold Standard remains a focal point in any landscape. Gold Standard is shipped as a bare root, a method we favor for its ability to establish quickly, double in size compared to its potted counterparts within the first season, and omit the necessity for plastic pots—providing an eco-friendly advantage.

Common Names: funkia, funkias, giboshi, plantain lily

Hosta Companion Plants: Astilbe, Dicentra, Ferns, Geranium, Grasses, Helleborus, Hemerocallis, Iris

Hosta Plant Care Instructions: During the early part of the season, the soil should be kept constantly moist. As the summer heat sets in, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. In late fall, once frost has turned the foliage brown, cut it back to the ground. To ensure vigor and prevent overcrowding, divide the roots every 3-5 years. Late fall or early spring are the best times for this task.
