Plant Features
Our Harlequin Hydrangea Plant is aptly named, the adjective Harlequin meaning variegated or multicolored, which is exactly what this unique hydrangea delivers! Each 6 to 9 inch mophead blossom starts out the most pastel hue of green, every petal on each floret changing gradually to become pink or purple-blue, depending upon the pH of your soil; each will be fantastically accented with a white margin and a tiny, periwinkle-blue eye at the center. You will see the best color and performance if this distinctive specimen is protected from direct, hot, afternoon sunlight. Coastal growers will see the same beautiful results by keeping this moderately salt tolerant hydrangea from direct salt spray. Harlequin blooms on old wood. This mounded shrub does best with no pruning, but if you must, it is best to prune after its flowers fade in late summer. Flower color is affected by soil pH, read our article on hydrangea care to change the color.
