Plant Features

Purple de Oro Hemerocallis is the one of the most popular daylilies. It offers 3-inch plum purple flowers with golden throats that bloom in early summer and continue right through early fall. The bloom count slows down in the heat of the summer. Daylilies are tough perennials that can survive less than ideal conditions including poor, dry soil, slopes, and planting under Black Walnut trees. Purple de Oro ships as a bare root. We like growing from bare roots because they establish quickly, become twice the size of a potted plant in the first season, and eliminate the need for plastic pots (a win for the environment).

Our Hemerocallis (Daylily) Plants are carefully cultivated without harmful pesticides, ensuring they are a safe and stunning addition to your garden. Guaranteed to arrive healthy and ready to thrive!

Planting Instructions:

  • - Best planted in spring or fall for optimal root establishment
  • - Space plants 18-24 inches apart to allow for mature growth and proper air circulation

Soil Preparation:

  • - Ideal soil pH: 6.0-7.5
  • - Prefers well-drained soil but tolerates a wide range of soil types

Watering Specifics:

  • - Water thoroughly when first planted, keeping the soil evenly moist
  • - Once established, Hemerocallis is drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture

Fertilizer Type:

  • - Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring for optimal blooming
  • - Feed again after the first bloom to encourage repeat blooming

Pruning and Training:

  • - Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering
  • - Cut back the foliage to ground level in late fall to prepare for the next growing season

Additional Pest Management:

  • - Hemerocallis is generally pest-free but may attract aphids and thrips; monitor and treat if necessary
  • - Ensure good air circulation to prevent rust or other fungal diseases

Blooming Indicators:

  • - Blooms from early summer through fall, with trumpet-shaped flowers in a variety of vibrant colors

Temperature Tolerance:

  • - Hardy in USDA zones 3-9, tolerates heat and drought once established

Companion Plants for Hemerocallis:

  • - Echinacea: Adds vibrant color and height to pair with Hemerocallis’s blooms
  • - Achillea: Complements Hemerocallis with its delicate flower clusters
  • - Rudbeckia: Provides a bold yellow contrast to Hemerocallis’s blooms
