Clematis

Clematis is a beloved and versatile flowering perennial vine that displays an exciting and stunning vertical element to gardens, walkways, and fence lines. With its profusion of showy blossoms and attractive foliage, these remarkably vigorous climbers are available in a broad variety of flower forms, sizes, and colors, including purple, blue, pink, red, and white. Some varieties feature large, star-shaped flowers, while others produce smaller, bell-shaped or clustered blooms, and yet others have blossoms that are difficult to describe adequately with words. Most Clematis prefer full sun to partial shade, with their roots kept cool and moist. Clematis will definitely benefit from the use of mulch around its base, especially if planted in a fully sunny environment. They thrive when planted near a  trellis, fence, or arbor, climbing by using their twining leaf stems (petioles) to attach themselves firmly to any support structure. Clematis is excellent for adding height and color to gardens, softening walls or fences, or for creating beautiful flowering pillars when grown on obelisks. These blooming perennial plants attract pollinators and can provide nesting material for birds, enhancing your garden's ecological value.

Proper pruning will result in optimal growth and flowering, though we’ve seen Clematis thrive with no pruning at all. Specific pruning techniques are suitable for different Clematis groups. Group 1 are early season bloomers, Group 2 are hybrid, early to mid-season bloomers with large blossoms, while Group 3 includes species and hybrids that bloom later in the season.  However, don’t let their recommended pruning requirements discourage you from growing these climbing beauties. It is really quite simple!
