Plant Features

Clematis 'The President' is renowned for its captivating violet-blue flowers that grace gardens throughout most of the summer. Not only is it an impressive repeat bloomer, but its hardy nature combined with a vigorous, yet manageable climbing habit also makes it a favorite among garden enthusiasts. The vivid purple blooms, measuring up to 7-inch in diameter, create a remarkable contrast with its dark green foliage. The President blooms initially in early to mid-season on older growth, with a subsequent flourish in late summer on new growth. This standout cultivar, which was honored with the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Plant Care: Plants do best with a climbing support and with a few inches of mulch to keep their roots cool. This variety blooms on both old wood and new, so pruning is not necessary unless you want to shape the plant. Any shaping should be done in late winter.

Clematis Companion Plants: Dahlia, Phlox, Salvia
